A backyard putting green is the one turf project people use every day. Ten minutes of putting after work beats a drive to the range, and a green where every putt rolls true keeps the habit going. A golfer who keeps missing a putt that should drop stops using the green.
Before you choose, roll a ball on putting turf samples at our Encino office on Ventura Blvd. Putting turf and fringe turf feel very different from a lawn.
Option 1 Builders holds a California B General Building license, CSLB #1122918, with a contractor's bond on file. The same crew builds the green, the lawn around it and the paver walk to it, on one written scope.
For golf enthusiasts, putting green calls usually start one of three ways: a practice green in an open corner of the yard, a green beside the pool, or a full backyard with turf, a green and a patio.
A 150-square-foot two-cup practice green and a 1,000-square-foot green with breaks and a chipping area get the same base steps. The size and contours change the price.
A putting green is only as good as its base. Any low spot or soft patch shows up as a putt that breaks the wrong way and ruins the ball roll. We compact and screed the base in thin layers before the turf goes down.
Our putting green installation in Encino page covers the build in detail. This page covers the rest of Los Angeles and shows greens we finished across the city.

Putting Green Installation Los Angeles: What the Job Involves
Backyard putting green installation is built in layers. Synthetic golf greens follow the same installation techniques as a real golf green, in miniature: dig out the area, compact a rock base, add a thinner layer of fine base, shape and screed it, set the cups, then lay and seam the putting turf and infill it. The fringe turf goes around the edge. Done right, the putting green surface is designed to replicate how a ball rolls on a natural green.
Los Angeles backyards come in every shape. Flat Valley lots in Lake Balboa and Van Nuys leave room for a big green. Hillside lots in Tarzana and the canyons often fit a green on a terrace below the house.
On a hillside lot, the green may need a retaining wall or extra grading to get a flat surface, and materials may come in by wheelbarrow. We tell you at the walkthrough.
Most backyard greens land between 200 and 500 square feet. Our finished greens include a green below a planted hillside in Tarzana and a green beside a pool in Lake Balboa.
Putting Green and Pet Turf in One Yard
Many Los Angeles families want a green for the golfer and an artificial grass lawn for the dogs. Dogs should stay off the putting surface, so we plan the two areas separately.
The lawn around the green can be built as pet turf with a permeable base, so the dog area drains while the green stays firm.
See pet turf installation in Los Angeles for how the dog area is built.
Putting Greens Beside Pavers and Patios
A paver walk to the green keeps shoes off the fringe and turns the green into part of your outdoor living and outdoor entertainment space.
See patio pavers for patios and walks built on the same compacted base.
For turf across the rest of the yard, see artificial turf installation in Los Angeles.
From Walkthrough to Finished Green
The free consultation is the walkthrough. We look at where the green would go, where the sun hits, how water drains and how big you want it.
A small practice green is often done in a few days. A large green inside a full backyard turf job is scheduled with the rest of the yard. Your written proposal includes the expected timeline.

Putting Green Cost and Pricing in Los Angeles
Putting green cost depends on size, the number of cups, contours and breaks, base work, access and the putting turf you pick. We do not quote greens by phone. We measure on site and give you a written number.
When you compare bids, ask each installer how deep the base is, whether the fine base layer is screeded, and what putting turf they use. Those answers explain most of the price gap.
Putting Turf, Infill and Sun
Putting turf has a short, dense pile so the ball rolls fast and true. Sand infill worked in with a brush firms up the surface and sets the speed, which golfers measure on the stimp scale.
Any synthetic turf warms up in direct sun. A quick rinse with a hose cools the surface, and the base drains the water. Upkeep is light compared to natural grass: blow off oak and sycamore leaves, brush the turf now and then, and top up infill around the cups. A well-built green has a long lifespan.
